Take Action / Businesses
For businesses in Moray, there are huge economic and social benefits in transitioning to net zero. And with more consumers switching to more ethical brands, products and service providers, it pays to keep up with the competition.
By acting now, we have a huge opportunity to protect future generations from the worst effects of climate change. Moray businesses can lead the way and show others how it’s done.
Here are some ideas to get you started.
Support a local community project
Collaborating with a local community project with a climate action focus is a great way to make a difference while sharing skills and knowledge. It also helps enhance your corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies. You can give time as a volunteer, provide pro bono assistance, give financial support as a sponsor, or even run workshops that support your employees mental health and wellbeing. View our list of volunteering opportunities below.
Develop a sustainability strategy
Putting a sustainability strategy in place can help future proof your business against the worst effects of climate change. It also gives business owners an opportunity to look at new ways of working which improve competitiveness. For those unsure where to start, organisations like Scottish Enterprise and the Federation of Small Businesses offer useful guidance on how to take that first step.
Get support to lower your emissions
Small to medium sized organisations can get support to lower their emissions via the Scottish Business Climate Collaboration (SBCC). You can even work out what your carbon footprint is and the best steps to reduce it. The website provides tools, knowledge and 12 simple e-learning modules which lead to an accreditation.
Upskill and empower colleagues
Encouraging colleagues and employees to take a greener approach in the workplace can help them to better understand climate related issues. It also empowers them to make better decisions about energy use and waste management at work - and at home. More information is available from the Green Jobs Workforce Academy at Skills Development Scotland.
Access funding for net zero projects
Lack of funding for businesses to make net zero improvements can be one of the biggest barrier to change. But Business Energy Scotland provides loans worth up to £100k to help small to medium enterprises pay for energy and carbon-saving upgrades in your business. Cashback grants of up to £20k are also available.
Encourage sustainable travel to the workplace
Transport is a major contributor to carbon emissions in Scotland - and especially in rural regions like Moray. However, there are still solutions to single-occupancy car use, from cycle-to-work schemes to incentivising car-sharing or encouraging employees to work from home more regularly. Way to Work has more information on active and sustainable travel to Scottish workplaces.
